White House Hauntings
Junior Paranormal Investigator
With all eyes and ears focused on the 2016 election, this paranormal investigator has decided to take closer look at one of the most haunted locations in the United States—the White House, official residence of the President of the United States.
Forty-two US presidents have called 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue home since construction finished in 1800. Let’s take a look at some of the most famous ghosties that may still be haunting these hallowed halls. As with all RVPS investigations, evidence comes first!
Any paranormal investigator worth her salt knows that basements are a hotbed of ghostly activity, and the White House seems to be no exception. According to numerous first-hand reports, a ghostly cat roams the depths. Known as the demon cat, this creepy kitty is said to be the spirit of one of hundreds of cats released in the basement tunnels of the White House to kill rats. The black cat has been known to appear before horrible events. It was seen just before two US presidents were assassinated. A guard also spotted the cat just before the stock market crash of the 1920s. Some have said it changes size before your eyes. It can be as small as a kitten or grow as big as a tiger. So is this fearsome feline fact or fiction? Concrete evidence is lacking, but White House guards aren’t known for telling tall tales…
What do a naked prime minister, European queen, and first canine have in common? They all have have witnessed the White House’s most famous ghost. Tall and lanky with his signature top hat and beard, Abraham Lincoln is one of the most recognizable US presidents. His spirit may also still haunt the halls of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Dozens of people have reported seeing Lincoln after his assignation in 1865.
Credible eyewitnesses include first ladies, White House staff, and foreign leaders. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill claimed to have seen the sixteenth president’s apparition when he was exiting the bathtub while staying at the White House. In 1942, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands was sleeping at the White House. She heard a knock at her door. And when she saw Lincoln’s ghost on the other side, she fainted from the shock. Even President Ronald Reagan’s dog, Rex, was known to bark at the door to the Lincoln bedroom, where the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Rex refused to enter the room. As we know, animals are uniquely in tuned to the paranormal. Was this pooch reacting to a paranormal presence?
Lincoln isn’t the only president said to haunt the White House. Presidents, first ladies, and staff alike have reported hearing seventh US president Andrew Jackson cussing from his former bedroom. Others have claimed to hear mysterious footsteps coming from the room. Some have claimed to hear third president Thomas Jefferson playing his violin. Some presidents have reported hearing strange noises coming from the attic, where ninth president William Henry Harrison died in office. George W. Bush’s daughters claimed to hear strange music coming out of the fireplace during their time in the White House.
So, will Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump have a mysterious roommate when he or she moves into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in January? Evidence may be mostly anecdotal, but the astounding quantity of reports from reliable eyewitnesses suggests a strong paranormal presence in America’s most famous house. Due to high security, conducting an official RVPS investigation of the White House has proven difficult, but we must persevere. With so much high-profile activity, further investigation is DEFINITELY warranted.
